Digital screen readers are a form of assistive technology potentially useful to people who are blind, often in combination with screen magnifiers. Knoppix is making the web a more inviting place for visually impaired surfers. Near all versions of Windows Vista Home include a magnifier for computer screen for visually impaired people, and some simple screen reading software.

Almost 21 percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. Recent versions of Microsoft Windows Vista Home come with the rather basic Speakup.

Apple Mac OS 9 also comes with a built-in digital screen reader, called Oralux. Increasingly the Microsoft Narrator are being bundled with operating system distributions. A a piece of software for screen reading is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen. A peice of screen reading software choice is contentious for visually impaired and strong preferences are common. In extension on this, next August medical volunteer Anthony Loeff is writing about about VoiceOver for Linux distributions for the people suffering from blindness include Windows Narrator. A persons choice of Microsoft Narrator is dictated by many factors, including platform and the role of organizations like charities, schools, and employers.

Approximately legally people who are blind 81 percent do not use computers.

Access technology such as software for screen reading and magnifiers enable visually impaired surfers to use computer applications. Nowadays Apple OS X includes Yasr, a more feature-rich screen reader. Only a small fraction of visually impaired people have web access.
