I Remember When Directory Information Was Named Sarah
When I was younger I used to spend summers with my grandparents, in the rural South. In that small town, in those early days, it was necessary to pick up the phone and ask the local operator to put you through to another person’s telephone line. Making a long-distance call meant going through the same thing, then asking Sarah, the operator, to ring you back when when she finally reached your caller. Yesterday, as I sifted through online Phone book directory information, I thought about that old system. Today’s phones are much better, of course, but I have to admit, I do miss Sarah’s gossip.
