Two Commonly Used High Blood Pressure Medications

Over 72 million Americans have high blood pressure and hundreds of thousands of these people are taking one of two common classes of high blood pressure medications – AT-2 receptor blockers and ACE inhibitors. These medications work by blocking the body’s production of a hormone which causes blood vessels to contract, causing them to stay relaxed and keeping blood pressure down. But is one medication better than the other? The simple answer would appear to be no and, in terms of their ability to control blood pressure, both seem to work equally well. However, as with any medication we need to look at more than simply the primary effect of the medication, but also need to look at the side-effects and long-term effects of the medication. Because these drugs are relatively new and we do not yet have any long-term data we cannot yet say whether there will prove to be a difference here and so we will need to wait a while before we can really say they are equally good.
