A Commentary On “Stephens: Is Obama Smart?”
Does anyone doubt that the last financial crisis was due in large part to policies instituted by the Bush administration, or that the current global meltdown is due more to the impressions created by Republican ideologues during the debate over the debt ceiling. In their determination to destroy the president, Republican leaders seem willing to consider the United States itself to be acceptable collateral damage. Mr. Obama’s crime, apparently, is to have attempted to negotiate a rational compromise considering the opposition to be composed of intelligent men, when in fact he was dealing with ideologues, blinded by self interest. Mr. Stephens has it right: it takes actual smarts to understand that glibness and self-belief are not sufficient proof of genuine intelligence. Mr. Stephens, and the GOP should listen to themselves and heed Mr. Stephen’s advice god.
