Why do those plates look so similar?

Many in the public are asking why vehicle tags look so similar. Vehicle number plates are intentionally designed to have a common font — while it may seem as if it’s making those tags look boring and uninteresting, the real purpose is to make these license plates easier to read. If vehicle owners were allowed to choose any font for their vehicle tags, they might inadvertently choose one it was difficult to read from a distance, or while the vehicle was moving. Worse yet: some owners would intentionally choose a difficult to read font in an attempt to deceive the public and law enforcement.
